The Luther Society is an institution in German Protestantism , organized as an association in 1918 , which is committed to researching the life and work of Martin Luther , to the popular science presentation and publication and to support a church life based on Luther. To this end, it publishes the Luther magazine and the Luther yearbooks three times a year , and holds annual conferences and seminars on current theological and religious-educational topics at the Luther sites. The society awards the Martin Luther Prize to young academics at regular intervals (most recently every two years) . It is awarded to students of theology, history, philology or philosophy at German universities for work dealing with Martin Luther and the Reformation legacy.

The Luther Society was founded in the course of the Luther Renaissance by the philosopher Rudolf Eucken , who, after the shocks of the First World War, considered it necessary to reconsider and reconsider the culture of the Reformer .

The chairman is (as of 2010) the Kiel professor of theology Johannes Schilling .
