Archdeacon (Protestant churches)

In the history of the German Protestant churches, the title archdeacon denotes the spiritual dignity of the second ordained theologian of an Evangelical Lutheran parish. Until the 19th century, only the main preacher of the congregation bore the title of pastor or pastor . Other ordained theologians active in the congregation bore the title archdeacon / archdeacon (in Zwickau also protodiacon ) and deacon .
