occupation

Batwoman is a 2019 television series about the cartoon character of the same name from DC Comics . In the title role, Ruby Rose plays Bruce Wayne's cousin Kate Kane, who three years after Batman's disappearance takes the vacant position as the vigilante protector of Gotham City and henceforth leads a double life. In the first season, Kate, who lives openly as a lesbian, meets the unscrupulous Alice who turns out to be her twin sister Beth, who was believed to be dead. The series is part of the Arrowverse and, like all other Arrowverse series, has been set on Earth Prime since the crossover crisis of the parallel earths .

action

Kate Kane is the cousin of Bruce Wayne, who has been Batman in Gotham City for many years . Fifteen years before the action begins, Kate and her mother and twin sister Beth are involved in an accident. Batman fails in the rescue, so that apparently only Kate survives the accident. Her father Jacob soon marries Cathrine Hamilton, who has evidence of Beth's death forged so that Kate and Jacob can close with her.

Jacob blames Batman for Beth's disappearance, while Kate suspects that her sister survived the disaster and joins the military. There she and Sophie Moore, with whom Kate is secretly having a relationship, achieve outstanding achievements. When the relationship is exposed, Kate is discharged from the army, while Sophie signs not to enter into a homosexual relationship and thus to remain in the military. Their relationship comes to an abrupt end.

The action begins three years after Batman's disappearance. After his disappearance, Jacob sets up the security company Crows , which is supposed to protect Gotham. His colleague Sophie is caught by the Wonderland gang , which causes Kate to save her. At Wayne Enterprise, Kate meets Batman's assistant Luke Fox and realizes that Bruce Wayne was Batman. She hires Luke to adjust Batman's suit and wears it when she rescues Sophie. Meanwhile, Kate recognizes in Alice, the leader of the Wonderland Gang, her sister Beth, believed to be dead, who wants to take revenge on her father because he was not looking for her, but rather thought her dead. She was held hostage for eleven years after her apparent death as a playmate for Jonathan Cartwright aka Mouse and went mad with Mouse. Her new identity was formed based on the book Alice in Wonderland . Since Kate still recognizes her sister in Alice, she still saves her life.

The apparent appearance of Batman throws Gotham into a new euphoria. However, Kate wants to show that she is not Batman and changes her outfit together with Luke Fox: She finally reveals herself as Batwoman, while the Wonderland gang is terrorizing Gotham. In order to get revenge on her father Jacob, Alice kidnaps Jacob, while Mouse, as his doppelganger, poisons his wife Cathrine, on whom Alice wants to take revenge for the pretense of her death. After his wife is murdered, Jacob is released by Alice and taken into custody by the police, who believe that he has poisoned Catherine. Catherine's daughter, the doctor Mary, then convinces her stepsister Kate not to spare Alice so that human lives can be saved.

History of origin

In July 2018, The CW announced a series about Batwoman, a cartoon character from DC Comics . Caroline Dries , Greg Berlanti , Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns serve as executive producers . The series is an offshoot of the Arrow verse , where Batwoman was first seen in December 2018 in the crossover episode Anderswelten .

Caroline Dires not only acts as executive producer, but is also responsible for the series script. The CW officially ordered the series on May 7, 2019.

The casting for the protagonist Kate Kane started in mid-2018. In August 2018 it was announced that the role would be cast with the Australian actress Ruby Rose. The announcement of the further cast took place from January 2019.

Production for the pilot began on March 4, 2019 and ended on March 25, 2019 in Vancouver . It was also shot in Chicago . On May 16, 2019, The CW released the first trailer for the series. This received a lot of criticism and negative ratings on YouTube. Misandry and the representation of feminism were cited as reasons for this .

The first episode aired on October 6, 2019 on The CW. On December 20, 2019, the first eight episodes of the first season were released as a German premiere on the Prime Video streaming service . The crossover episode (1.09) was first published unannounced on March 5, 2020 on iTunes with German synchronization and was removed a short time later. This episode officially appeared on Prime Video on July 24, 2020, along with the rest of the first season.

In May 2020, Ruby Rose announced her departure from the series after the first season. Contrary to initial assumptions, the role will not be re-cast, but replaced by the character Ryan Wilder , who will from now on play the main role. In July 2020, Javicia Leslie was announced as the series' new lead actress.

Cast and dubbing

The German-language dubbing is done by the dubbing company Interopa Film in Berlin. The dialogue books are written by Jürgen Wilhelm, Tatjana Kopp , Martin Westphal , Martin Schowanek , Andreas Pollak and Gabi Voussem . The dialogue director leads Beate Andres .

reception

Wolfgang Höbel called the series in Der Spiegel a "..a joy for the gender-politically agitated heart and an insult to the entertainment- loving brain." , The ".. lavishly prepared adventures" and the ".. grotesque clinical Gotham" as well as ".. the wooden dialogues ” .

In addition to the pale leading actress, Reinhard Prahl from the quota meter criticized the ".. too much feminism propagated with a mallet .." and ".. the lack of complex development of the secondary characters." The series was certified as ".. still a lot of room for improvement." .

Claudia Reinhard praised the performance of the leading actresses Rose and Skarsten in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , but was bothered by the "... rushed turns, unnecessary clichés and stilted dialogues ..."
