Ruby Rose Langenheim (born March 20, 1986 in Melbourne ) is an Australian actress , model , presenter and DJ .

Ruby Rose attended University High School in Parkville and then Footscray City College, both in suburbs of Melbourne. Her modeling career began in 2002 when she attended a casting for the Australian teenage magazine Girlfriend and took second place behind model Catherine McNeil.

In 2008 Ruby Rose worked as a video jockey for MTV Australia. The following year she hosted the news talk show The 7pm Project . In 2009 she won the Australian ASTRA Award for Favorite Personality. She made other appearances on television, including hosting the Australian version of Ultimate School Musical in 2010 . She made her cinema debut in 2013 in the Australian social drama Around the Block with the role of Hannah, who has an affair with the main character Dino ( Christina Ricci ).

Ruby Rose has played the role of Stella in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black since 2015 . Together with the rest of the cast, she was honored at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016 in the category Best Acting Company in a TV Series - Comedy .

At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2015 she hosted the awards ceremony together with Ed Sheeran . She is also active as a DJ, tours through discos and played at the Pacha in New York and the XS Daylight Club in Las Vegas.

Her increasing media awareness earned Ruby Rose larger orders as a model, including for the cosmetics line Maybelline New York in Australia (from 2010). Her androgynous appearance and numerous tattoos on her arms and upper body became her trademarks. In 2016 she was the model for the Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply's spring collection . Since March 2016 she has been the new face of the American cosmetics brand Urban Decay, a subsidiary of L'Oréal .

Ruby Rose wrote the single "Guilty Pleasure" in 2012 and released it in collaboration with British pop singer Gary Go . It was a hit in Europe, especially in Hungary. In 2016, the record label that produced the single wanted to release the song again in a remix version, but Ruby Rose forbade the re-release.

In August 2018 it was announced that Rose would take on the role of Batwoman in the television series surrounding the Arrowverse . An independent series with her in this role premiered in October 2019.

In May 2020, it was announced that Rose was giving up the role of Batwoman because the stress associated with playing the main role became too much for her.

Private life

Ruby Rose outed with twelve years as a lesbian . For her sexuality, she was teased by children in her school, which resulted in a suicide attempt. As a child, Rose was sexually abused by a relative. As a result of these events, Rose suffers from bipolar disorder and clinical depression .

Rose is committed to the rights of homosexual people and AIDS welfare.

According to her own statement, Rose always wanted to be a boy as a child and raised money for gender reassignment. In 2014, she explains, “It was in my head as something I wanted to do and then I just stopped doing it. I think I just grew out of it. I even slept on my stomach to avoid getting breasts, which apparently worked ”. Rose does not feel firmly attached to any gender, but switched back and forth between the gender roles prescribed by society in the course of her life. In July 2014 - one week after the release of her short film Break Free  - Rose professed to be gender-fluid (“fluent between the sexes”). In the course of her film, she transforms step by step from a very feminine woman to a heavily tattooed man by cutting off her hair, wiping off the makeup that covers her face and tattoos, tying off her breasts and putting on a suit. Rose continues to prefer female personal pronouns.

From 2014 to 2015 Rose was engaged to the fashion designer Phoebe Dahl , from October 2016 to April 2018 in a relationship with Jessica Louise Origliasso (singer of The Veronicas ), with whom she was already a couple in 2008.

Ruby Rose is vegan and lives in Los Angeles.
