action

A few days after John Wick killed the Russian mafia boss Viggo Tarasov and his son Iosef, John finds out that his Ford Mustang is in Abram Tarasov's workshop. This is where stolen cars are dismantled and the individual parts are resold. Tarasov is the brother of Viggo and the uncle of Iosef. John takes his vehicle back and kills numerous men of Tarasov. Then he seeks out Tarasov and offers him peace, which Tarasov accepts.

He has Aurelio repair his badly damaged vehicle and again concretes his weapons and equipment under the floor at home in order to resume his interrupted retirement. Meanwhile, he is visited by Santino D'Antonio, an Italian mafioso and former client who demands the redemption of a debt coin. John once drew this with his blood so that Santino would help him leave the organization. When John refuses to help and cites his retirement, Santino blows up John's house with a grenade launcher.

John then goes to the Continental , where its manager Winston reminds him of the two inviolable rules of the underworld: No "business" on the property of the Continental hotels, and debt coins must be redeemed. So John meets with Santino again and accepts the assignment: He is supposed to kill Santino's sister Gianna in Rome , whose seat in the High Chamber of the Twelve Council, the worldwide criminal syndicate, Santino envies and claims for her.

In the Roman Continental , John is met by the manager Julius and is equipped with weapons and bulletproof clothing. He expects Gianna in her bathroom, but she wants to determine her own death and cuts her wrists. John withdraws and is provided by Cassian, Gianna's bodyguard. During a wild shooting and escape through the catacombs , Santino's people suddenly appear with their leader Ares, who are also supposed to kill John. John is able to kill most of the attackers and finally gets into a duel with Cassian, which ends with both breaking through a glass door into the Continental and having to stop their fighting there due to the rules. After a drink together at the hotel bar, Cassian promises to take revenge for Gianna's death.

While John returns to New York, Santino launches a $ 7 million killing contract with the organization for the murder of his sister. All the killers who get the job on their cell phones hunt down John, who takes refuge in a subway station and can gradually kill all the attackers. In a subway, there is another duel with Cassian, whom John rams his knife into his body, seriously injuring him but leaving him alive. Exhausted and injured, John accepts the help of the underworld boss Bowery King, who reports to a network of beggars across New York. He has him treated and gives him a gun with seven cartridges, symbolizing the bounty, and information about Santino's whereabouts.

In Santinos Museum, where his admission to the Council of Twelve is to take place, John first kills Santinos men and pursues him in a mirror cabinet . His bodyguard Ares gets in John's way while Santino takes refuge in the Continental . John incapacitates Ares and follows Santino to the hotel. He provokes John that he cannot harm him here. Despite Winston's attempt to stop John, the latter kills Santino with a shot in the head and leaves the hotel with his dog.

The next day, Charon, the hotel receptionist, takes John to Central Park , where Winston is waiting for him. He reveals that the Camorra doubled its bounty to 14 million for the murder of Santino and extended it to the entire world. In addition, because of his rule violation, he loses all privileges and access to the underworld resources. Winston gives him a coin and promises to hold off the job for another hour. John says goodbye with the message that he will kill anyone who tries to kill him. Knowing that he will soon be hunted, he runs off through the park with his dog while the organization's killing assignment is distributed to the cell phones of its hit men.

background

After the financial success of John Wick (2014), the production company Thunder Road Pictures planned to shoot a sequel. In February 2015 it was confirmed that it was being worked on; Keanu Reeves will take on the lead role of John Wick again, and the stunt men Chad Stahelski and David Leitch will sit in the director's chair as in the first part. Since the latter had to leave due to scheduling conflicts, Stahelski took over the sole direction.

In addition to Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne took on one of the supporting roles; both last stood together in front of the camera for the Matrix film series (1999–2003).

Reviews

On Rotten Tomatoes , John Wick: Chapter 2 has a rating of 90% with the consensus: " John Wick: Chapter 2 does what a sequel should do, which in this case means doubling the non-stop exciting choreographed plot, which is at its predecessor was so much fun. ”On Metacritic , the film scored 75 out of 100 points and received mostly positive reviews .

The film service wrote: “The second part of the action film series with Keanu Reeves (...) emphasizes the unwillingness of the killer, but plunges him into even more brutal fights. The simple, spectacularly staged story has no concrete relation to reality, but points to the existence of criminal parallel universes. The fast-paced action sequences are imaginatively choreographed at high speed, but that doesn't detract from the violence. ”Andreas Staben gave film releases 3.5 out of 5 stars in his review and wrote that the predecessor“ emphasized the human side of the grieving widower Wick ", But now" the cold professionalism of the reactivated killer comes to the fore ". With this “becoming a superhero of the protagonist” the “emotionality of the revenge story” from the first part is lost, but in return this allows “an intensification and intensification of the action scenes”, which were “the main pleasure” in the first film.

Sascha Westphal from Epd Film gave the second part 5 out of 5 points. “Stahelski's action scenes are no longer choreographed death ballets. They are more like classic battle paintings. The visual arts take the place of dance. And that changes everything. The viewer is invited to look analytically. Every fight and every exchange of fire are recognizable as an expression of a world in which everyone is constantly fighting for life and death. "
