This is the third part of John Wick series of films . As in the previous two parts, Chad Stahelski directed and Derek Kolstad directed the script. Keanu Reeves slipped back into the eponymous role of John Wick.

The film was released in US cinemas on May 17, 2019 and in German cinemas on May 23, 2019.

action

After John Wick kills Santino D'Antonio in the Continental , he is on the run through New York. As a reward in the amount of initially 14 million US dollars has been exposed to him and he by the murder of D'Antonio all the privileges that to him as a member of the Continentals has forfeited had been granted, he now tries from New York City to escape. He reaches the city library and takes a crucifix chain with an "exchange medallion" from a hidden book. In the library, John is attacked by an assassin before the deadline given to him, but whom he is able to defeat, even if seriously injured. John rushes to a well-known doctor who treats his injury. At 6 p.m. sharp, he was "excommunicated" and all the killers in town were hunting him. On the run from assassins, he fights his way to the Tarkovsky Theater , where he visits the director, a woman from the past who accepts the crucifix as a ticket for the safe passage to Essaouira near Casablanca in Morocco .

Meanwhile, a High Chamber judge meets with Winston, the manager of the Continental , and the Bowery King, the leader of a network of tramp bombers. The referee accuses them of helping John Wick in the murder of Santino D'Antonio and admonishes both of them to leave their offices in seven days or they will face dire consequences.

In Casablanca, John first meets killers who want to kill him, but at the request of Sofia, a former friend and manager of the Casablanca Continental , the concierge calls back. He asks Sofia to help him by taking him to the Elder, a high-ranking member of the High Chamber, so that he can request his bounty waiver . Sofia wants to refuse, but John has a coin from her. She takes him to an assassin named Berrada, who tells John that he can find the elder by wandering the desert until he can no longer walk. In exchange for this information, he asked for one of Sofia's armored fighting dogs . When Sofia refuses, he shoots the dog. In a fit of rage, Sofia shoots Berrada in the leg, and the duo, along with the fighting dogs, fight their way out of the kasbah and flee into the desert.

Sofia has redeemed her debt and leaves John in the desert. He roams the desert until he collapses from exhaustion but is found by the elder's men. Explaining his actions, John says that he desperately wants to move on to keep the memory of the love he once had for his wife. The elder agrees to forgive a John, but only if he murders Winston and works for the Chamber until his death. To show his commitment and loyalty to the Chamber, John cuts off his ring finger and gives the elder his wedding ring.

In the meantime, the referee recruits the assassin Zero and his students to enforce the will of the Chamber. With the help of Zero, she finds the headmistress and the Bowery King guilty. As punishment, both are mutilated, the latter so badly that he almost succumbs to his wounds. John comes back to New York City and is followed by Zero's men, but is able to escape to the Continental and ask for asylum there . He meets with Winston, who encourages John not to die as a murderer but as a man who loved his wife and was loved by her.

The arbitration tribunal joins in, but Winston refuses to leave office and John refuses to kill Winston. As a result, the referee has the Continental "secularized", which allows killing within the building. Zero and his men and two buses with armored enforcers to support them are sent. After these kill almost all of the hotel's staff, John and the concierge Charon can defeat the enforcers with shotguns and armor-piercing ammunition. John is then ambushed by Zero's students. He kills all but two who were the only ones who fought him respectfully. In the ensuing duel, Zero is killed by John.

The referee negotiates with Winston, who declares the resistance a show of strength and offers his loyalty to the Chamber. When John arrives, Winston apparently shoots him, causing John to fall from the roof of the Continental . The hotel reopens, but the arbitration tribunal informs Winston that John's body has disappeared and that he is still a threat to both of them. Wounded John Wick is extradited to the severely scarred Bowery King, who tells him that he is angry with the Chamber and will fight them. He asks John if he feels the same, and John agrees.

production

In October 2016, before the appearance of the second part of the John Wick series, director Chad Stahelski announced that a third part was in the works.

The original title refers to the Latin proverb " Si vis pacem para bellum ". That means literally translated: "If you want (the) peace, prepare (the) war." At the same time Parabellum is the name for a certain pistol and the caliber of the ammunition used in it.

Reviews

John Wick: Chapter 3 achieved a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes . The site's summarized consensus reads: " John Wick: Chapter 3 loads up for another tough round of brilliantly choreographed over-the-top action that fans of the franchise are demanding." On Metacritic , the film scored 73 out of 100 points, which on " generally positive criticism "suggests.

The film service said that the third part of the "cinematic action battle" set "only a few formally remarkable accents" and suffered from a "tenacious dramaturgy of redundancies, which is hardly enlivened by the meaningless fight scenes." For Carsten Baumgardt from film starts is John Wick: Chapter 3 , however, the "best ever part of the series" with "hammer hard [r] Action, strong [n] figures and lots of atmosphere." Among the actors, Halle Berry in particular left a “lasting impression” in a guest appearance “as an unruly old friend Sofia”. Baumgardt gave a final rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Sascha Westphal from Epd Film rated the film 3 out of 5 points and wrote that the “comic universe John Wicks” was a “Kafkaesque version of the contemporary world” and that the “Guild of Assassins” was like a “global corporation”. Their closeness to the “Roman Catholic Church as well as high finance” makes the film “a political parable”. However, this reorientation has a price: “The individual action sequences are still impressively choreographed. But they no longer have the unique pull that made the second part a milestone in its genre. "

continuation

Shortly after the cinema release, a fourth part of the film series was confirmed, which will be directed again by Chad Stahelski and will come to US cinemas on May 27, 2022. After just under a month has passed in the action time from part one to part three, there should be a longer break between the third and fourth part, in which John Wick and the ailing networks can regenerate.
