action

Former hit man John Wick has just lost his wife Helen, who died of an unnamed illness. Posthumously he receives a Beagle puppy from her on the day of the funeral as a present, together with a letter in which she informs him that she will leave him the puppy named Daisy so that he can cope with his loss and love something again.

The next day, John drives his Ford Mustang out to get dog food. He meets three Russian gang members at a gas station. Their leader Iosef admires John's car and wants to buy it. John declines the offer and drives away. The three Russians follow him home, break into him that night and brutally beat John up. He has to watch helplessly how they mistreat Daisy before he is knocked out. When he wakes up the next morning, Daisy, who has dragged herself to him, seriously injured, is dead and his Ford Mustang is stolen.

The following day, Iosef brings the car to Aurelio, a workshop owner who specializes in defacing stolen cars. Aurelio recognizes whose car Iosef brought him and refuses to give the car a new chassis number. During the ensuing discussion, Aurelio knocks down Iosef and sends him away despite his threats. John later visits Aurelio and asks about his car. Aurelio explains that the car was with him and that it was Iosef, the son of Viggo Tarasov, the leader of a Russian crime syndicate, who stole the Mustang.

Viggo demands an explanation from Aurelio, why this hit his son, and also beats Iosef when he confronts him and realizes what this has done. He explains to Iosef that John Wick used to work for him as a killer. At that time they gave him the nickname Babaj (" The Black Man "), although he was not simply the black man , but rather the man you call when you want to kill the black man . John stopped working as a professional killer when he fell in love with a woman. In order to be able to leave Viggo's services in peace, he had previously helped Viggo to take control of the syndicates by single-handedly completing an "impossible mission" within one day: Viggo's position of power is based on the massacre that John then caused to this day .

Viggo wants to protect his son from John's revenge and tries to talk to John, but in vain. Viggo then instructs his consigliere Avi to send some of his men to John's home to eliminate him. However, John, who previously unearthed his hidden weapons and gold supplies, takes out Viggo's men without major problems. Viggo then puts a $ 2 million bounty on John and offers this amount to Marcus, a Vietnam veteran and John's mentor. Marcus apparently agrees. Meanwhile, John checks into the Continental Hotel. It is primarily professional killers who stay there, and the rule applies that no orders may be carried out within the Continental. When Viggo learns of John's whereabouts, he doubles the bounty in case someone is willing to break this rule. Meanwhile, John learns from Winston, the owner of the hotel, where Viggo's son is staying.

John drives to the club where Iosef is having fun, kills his friend Victor and most of the security guards, but loses sight of Iosef in the fight with Kirill - one of the bodyguards. John returns to the Continental to have the hotel doctor on call for his wounds. There, Ms. Perkins, a former accomplice and also a professional killer, awaits him. She wants to kill John in his sleep. Marcus, who has John in his sights with a sniper rifle and had only pretended to accept the bounty, shoots the pillow next to his face to wake him up. John is able to overpower Perkins and learns from her the hiding place of Viggo's money, an Orthodox church. While he is on his way there, he leaves Perkins with Harry, another guest of the hotel. He should guard her and later release her. But she can free herself unnoticed and kills Harry.

In the church, John Viggo's money is burned and the data media stored there containing priceless documents that Viggo holds on to powerful people. Viggo and his men come to church and eventually overwhelm John. He tries to convince John to come back to him as a professional killer. When he refuses, Viggo leaves the church and instructs Kirill and his men to kill John. However, Marcus turns off one of Kirill's men so that John can free himself and kill Kirill. In the end John finds out from Viggo where the safe house is where Iosef is hiding, drives there, kills his guards and him.

Meanwhile, Perkins reports to Viggo about the contact between John and Marcus. Viggo has Marcus kidnapped, whom he tortures and ultimately kills. Viggo tells John that he killed Marcus and tries to lure him to his home, where Perkins will be waiting for him. However, she is intercepted by Winston and executed as a punishment for breaking the rules of the Continental. Winston contacts John and tells him where to find Viggo.

When they meet, Viggo and John have a final fight, in which Viggo dies and John is badly wounded. When John drives Vigo's SUV into a wall, he gets out and watches a video of himself and his wife Helen on the cell phone. He breaks into a veterinary clinic and treats his wounds there. He then takes a pit bull puppy with him and goes for a walk to where he had his last date with Helen.

Influences

According to director Stahelski, films like Two Glorious Scoundrels , Point Blank , Four in the Red Circle and The Killer served as a template for John Wick . In particular, the huge amount of untold background story as in Two Glorious Scoundrels can be seen again in John Wick . Movies like the Vengeance trilogy by Park Chan-wook influenced the film, in terms of minimalist composition and graphic work. Screenwriter Kolstad, on the other hand, names Alistair MacLean and Stephen King as influences. In World Creation he refers to MacLean, in King to what the main character is capable of. Next to Sergio Leone , Akira Kurosawa , Steve McQueen and other cinematic influences of the 1960s and 1970s called.

John Wick has received mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film got an average rating of 86%. The consensus on the site is, "Stylish, suspenseful, and dizzyingly kinetic, John Wick serves as a satisfying return to the action genre for Keanu Reeves and, it looks like, could be the first part of a franchise." The film scored 68 out of 100 on Metacritic Points and was perceived as “generally positive”.

The Filmdienst saw a "hard [n], gleaming chrome [n] revenge thriller that significant under its stylish facade narrative holes laminated and the" look "of the main character and almost impossible violence thunderstorm is on every chance." Carsten Baumgardt rated John Wick on film starts with 4 out of 5 stars and wrote that the film "may have a modest story", but was "optically so innovative and so furiously staged" that "action fans should definitely not miss this infernal orgy of violence". Keanu Reeves cut a "brilliant figure" and was "perfectly cast as the eponymous former mafia killer on a bloody campaign of revenge". In addition, the film looks "just fantastic" and spreads freezing cold through the "almost clinical [n] steel blue [n] look".

Kai Mihm from epd Film was less enthusiastic . He only awarded 2 out of 5 stars and criticized the fact that the action scenes did not provide the desired cinematic fun. Despite the sovereign choreography, one is not “packed because everything somehow runs too smoothly and mechanically”. Despite the good idea, he criticized the portrayal of the gangster world as a New York parallel world, "because this universe is not rough and lively, but silly artificial". The characters are also given little depth, "Actors like Ian McShane and Willem Dafoe have nothing to do, Michael Nyqvist is relegated to a joke."

Sequels

According to the two directors, there was an opportunity to do sequels from the start. It was also announced from the distribution company Lionsgate that John Wick was being developed as a franchise with several films.

Aftermath

In the online game Payday 2 , the character John Wick was introduced as a playable character with his typical weapon and his sunglasses as a wearable mask due to an advertising deal between Overkill Software, Lionsgate and Thunder Road Pictures. On October 20, 2016, a game expansion named after John Wick was implemented for the online game. It contained John Wick's pistol, a submachine gun, and a sniper rifle .

In addition, based on the character John Wick, a meme was created as an internet phenomenon, which mostly shows a still photo of Wicks while his pistol is being loaded. This meme is used in response to content such as annoying, hurting or stealing dogs and puppies.
