Kevin Scott Nash (born July 9, 1959 in Detroit , Michigan ), also known by his temporary ring name Diesel , is an American wrestler and actor .

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Kevin Nash has played basketball since high school and began a professional career in Europe in the early 1980s, including in the team of MTV 1846 Giessen . After suffering a cruciate ligament injury at a game in Germany , Nash had to end his basketball career and was stationed in Giessen as a US Army soldier . After returning to the US, Nash decided to pursue a career as a wrestler and was trained by Jody "The Assassin" Hamilton , father of the well-known referee Nick Patrick .

World Championship Wrestling (1990-1993)

Nash made his debut in the WCW in 1990 and appeared as Steel in the tag team The Master Blasters , but remained without significant success. His character was converted to Oz after just under a year ; a gimmick based on the Wizard of Oz . His initially very strong push flattened out after a few months, until Nash was finally subjected to another gimmick change. At the beginning of 1992 he was part of the group A Half Ton of Holy Hell under the name Vinnie Vegas , together with Harley Race , Big Van Vader and Mr. Hughes , as well as in the tag team with Big Sky . The stable dissolved in February, whereupon Nash joined forces with Diamond Dallas Page , The Diamond Studd and Scotty Flamingo to form The Diamond Mine . Nash teamed with Page until the end of the year before eventually leaving the league.

World Wrestling Federation (1993–1996)

Under the name Diesel , Nash played in the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) from the beginning of 1993 as a trucker who was hired as a bodyguard by Shawn Michaels . In 1994, Diesel increasingly competed in matches himself and won his first title in April when he defeated reigning Intercontinental Champion Razor Ramon . In August he won the WWF World Tag Team Championship from the Headshrinkers together with Shawn Michaels , but only lost the Intercontinental Championship to Razor Ramon at SummerSlam one day later . At this time, Shawn Michaels often accidentally caught his partner with his super kick , which eventually led to the separation of the team at the 1994 Survivor Series and the associated face - turn Diesel. The Tag Team Championship was then revoked.

Three days after the Survivor Series, Diesel defeated WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bob Backlund in just 8 seconds and achieved his greatest success to date. With this title win, Diesel became the first wrestler to win the triple crown of the WWF within a single year. Since Shawn Michaels emerged victorious from the Royal Rumble in 1995, the former partners met in a title match at WrestleMania XI, in which Michaels' new bodyguard Psycho Sid accidentally cost his protégé the victory. A day later, Diesel defended Michaels after he was attacked by Sid. As a result, Michael's face did gymnastics and occasionally re-formed a tag team with Diesel, known as Two Dudes with Attitudes .

In September Diesel and Michaels defeated Yokozuna and Owen Hart , winning the Tag Team Championship for the second time. Since Michaels had meanwhile become Intercontinental Champion again, they now held all the men's titles of the WWF. The following day, however, the decision was reversed, as Owen Hart, pinned by Diesel , had been officially replaced by the British Bulldog before the match . 51 weeks after winning the title, Diesel finally had to give up the WWF World Heavyweight Championship at the Survivor Series in 1995 to Bret Hart , whereupon he became a heel again.

After brief feuds against Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash left the WWF and switched back to WCW, where he started under his real name.

Return to the WCW (1996-2001)

Together with Scott Hall , Nash formed the team The Outsiders in the WCW , which, according to the storyline, was sent by an "enemy organization" (for a short time it was explicitly referred to the WWF) to take over the league. At the 1996 Bash at the Beach , Hulk Hogan performed a shocking heel-turn by allying with the Outsiders and eventually forming the New World Order (nWo). The nWo initiated a fundamental change in the previously very family-oriented mainstream wrestling in the USA and was decisive for the WCW being able to replace the WWF as the dominant league.

In April 1998, Nash attacked Hogan, the leader of the Stable, and formed his own version of the nWo, known as nWo Wolfpac , which feuded against nWo Hollywood . When Sting joined the Wolfpac, he split from his partner The Giant , with whom he held the WCW World Tag Team Championship . Nash then took over the role of Giant and thus held his first title in the WCW, which he lost only a month later to Hall and the Giant. At World War 3 in November, Nash won the 60-men Battle Royal and earned a match against reigning WCW World Heavyweight Champion Bill Goldberg . In this match, which took place at Starrcade in 1998, Nash Goldberg's long winning streak ended when his former partner Scott Hall attacked him with a stun gun and thus switched from nWo Hollywood to Wolfpac. In January 1999, Nash challenged the returning Hulk Hogan and gave him the title by pinning himself to the chest (known as the Fingerpoke of Doom ) after a light nudge . Thus the nWo was reunited under leader Hogan, but was far from able to build on its earlier successes.

In the same year, Nash defeated the reigning WCW Champion Diamond Dallas Page and entered his second title reign, which was ended two months later by Randy Savage . The next evening Savage defended the title against the returning Hogan, but lost when Nash retaliated for the defeat and attacked Savage. A week later, Nash attacked Hogan again and allied with Savage and his partner Sid Vicious . In a Retirement match at Road Wild 1999 Hogan defeated Nash. A few months later, Nash returned to found a new version of the now-defunct nWo together with Scott Hall, Jeff Jarrett and Bret Hart. The new edition of the table was discontinued after a short time.

In the course of 2000, Kevin Nash won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, which was increasingly dismantled by frequent title changes (including to non-wrestlers such as David Arquette and Vince Russo) three more times. He also worked as a mentor of the stable The Natural Born Thrillers , which betrayed him and ultimately feuded against him. In the team The Insiders , Nash won the tag team titles twice with Diamond Dallas Page at the end of the year. Nash lost to Scott Steiner in a retirement match in February 2001 and did not return until the WCW was sold to the WWF.

Return to WWE (2002-2003)

After Nash's contract with AOL-Time Warner - the production company of the now defunct WCW - had expired, he was hired by the WWF together with Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan and formed a new edition of the nWo with the aforementioned wrestlers from February 2002. Since Hogan practically forced a face-turn due to positive audience reactions and Hall was fired because of his alcohol problems , the new nWo did not last long. In addition, Nash injured his biceps and later his quadriceps , so that he had to pause until the spring of 2003.

Nash returned with a character more reminiscent of his earlier gimmick Diesel in the now renamed World Wrestling Entertainment league and feuded against Triple H , whom he had to admit defeat at Bad Blood 2003 in a Hell in a Cell match . He later feuded against Chris Jericho , against whom he had a Hair vs. Hair Match lost. The Elimination Chamber at SummerSlam 2003 was Nash's last match for the WWE. He was eliminated by Chris Jericho.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2004-2010)

After a few matches for Ultimate Pro Wrestling and ZERO1-MAX, Nash made his debut with Scott Hall at TNA's first monthly Pay Per View Victory Road . In the short-lived stable Kings of Wrestling , the two allied themselves with the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett.

With the first edition of TNA iMPACT! on October 1, 2005 Nash returned and attacked Jarrett, whom he challenged to a title match at Bound For Glory . However, the day before the Pay Per View, Nash was admitted to hospital with chest pain; his place in the match was taken by Rhino . Nash later announced that he had suffered a minor heart attack.

In April 2006, Kevin Nash returned to TNA again and began a feud against the X Division . He was supported during his campaign against the X Division by Alex Shelley and later by Johnny Devine and formed with them the stable Paparazzi Productions . Nash's primary feuding opponent at the time was Chris Sabin.

After minor feuds, from October 23, 2008, Nash was a member of The Main Event Mafia , which u. a. and Kurt Angle , Booker T and Sting belonged. He won his first title at TNA on July 19, 2009 at Victory Road with the TNA Legends Championship by defeating AJ Styles . However, he lost the title to Mick Foley just three days later . At Hard Justice on August 16, 2009, however, he won the title back from Foley. At Bound for Glory on October 18, 2009, he lost the title to Eric Young in a match in which Hernandez was involved. Shortly thereafter, the Main Event Mafia disbanded .

In early 2010 there was a reunion with Scott Hall and Sean Waltman as The Band . On May 4, 2010, Nash and Hall won the TNA World Tag Team Championship from Matt Morgan . In the course of Hall's resignation from TNA, the title was revoked on June 14, 2010. Since Waltman was also fired, The Band ceased to exist a little later.

Nash played his last match for TNA along with Sting and D'Angelo Dinero against Jeff Jarrett and Samoa Joe at Bound for Glory on October 10, 2010, which they won. He left TNA a day later at Impact.

Independent leagues (since 2011)

Second return to WWE (since 2011)

On January 30, 2011, Nash returned to WWE after more than seven years and took part in the Royal Rumble event in the name-giving Battle Royal . Since then he has mainly acted behind the scenes as a kind of advisor to younger wrestlers. At the big event SummerSlam 2011 he attacked CM Punk after his WWE Championship match against John Cena , which led to Punk's title loss to Alberto Del Rio . This resulted in a feud with Triple H, which ended at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs . In 2012, Nash made some appearances in the WWE Development League, NXT. In 2013 he made appearances again at NXT and in January 2014 repeated his service at the Royal Rumble.

Backstage

In the early 1990s, Kevin Nash befriended Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, and Paul Levesque and formed the Kliq with them . This group had a great influence on the booking of the then WWF , especially around 1995, and was often criticized for their selfish behavior. Wrestlers like Shane Douglas blamed the Kliq for their failure in the WWF in the past . Through his membership in the Kliq , Nash was involved in the so-called curtain call in May 1996; the faces Michaels and Hall, as well as the heels Levesque and Nash hugged after a show in Madison Square Garden and broke Kayfabe , which was completely unusual at the time. The background was that Nash and Hall had already signed a contract with WCW and wanted to say goodbye to their friends after their last WWF matches in the ring.

In the WCW Kevin Nash worked temporarily as a booker from 1999 and was often made responsible for the decline of the league. In this case, too, he was accused of selfishness, as he repeatedly booked himself for WCW World Heavyweight Champion and generally preferred wrestlers who were friends.
