Allen Neal Jones (born June 2, 1977 in Camp Lejeune , North Carolina ), better known as AJ Styles , is an American wrestler . From May 2002 to December 2013 he was under contract with the North American wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling , and then with New Japan Pro Wrestling . On January 24, 2016, he made his WWE debut in the Royal Rumble match. Jones is a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion , IWGP Heavyweight Champion , WWE Champion , United States Champion, and Intercontinental Champion

Private life

Allen Jones is married to the teacher Wendy. Together they have three sons (Ajay Covell, Avery, Albey) and one daughter (Anney). Jones is good friends with wrestler Daniel Covell .

Jones attended Anderson College in Anderson, South Carolina on a partial scholarship in wrestling .

Wrestling career

Beginnings

He was trained by Rick Michaels and made his debut on February 15, 1999 under the ring name Mr. Olympia in the League National Championship Wrestling . There he won the television and the lightweight title .

He then moved to the NWA Wildside and got the ring name "AJ Styles". Between January 2000 and January 2001, Jones won the Television Champion title twice more.

At the beginning of 2001 Jones then joined World Championship Wrestling , but was not taken over after the takeover by the Promotion World Wrestling Entertainment due to his contract with AOL Time Warner. He then returned to NWA Wildside. On December 22, 2001 , Jones defeated his coach and mentor Rick Michaels to become NWA Wildside Heavyweight Champion . On March 23, 2002, at NWA Hardcore Hell , he lost the title to David Young.

Ring of Honor Wrestling (2002-2006)

Jones made his Ring of Honor wrestling debut on April 27, 2002 on the Night of Appreciation Show. On February 14, 2004 he became the first ROH Pure Champion .

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2002-2013)

X Division Champion and NWA World Heavyweight Champion (2002-2006)

After further appearances at independent promotions, Jones signed a contract with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in May 2002 . On June 26, 2002, Jones became the first TNA X-Division Champion . Together with Jerry Lynn he later won the NWA World Tag Team Champion title . On August 28, 2002 Jones lost the X-Division Champion title to Jerry Lynn, with whom he subsequently denied a feud program. On October 23, 2002 he won the X-Division Championship from Syxx-Pac . On November 6, 2002, he lost the title a second time to Lynn.

On June 11, 2003, he won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Jeff Jarrett and Raven . On October 22, 2003 Jones lost the title back to Jeff Jarrett, with whom he then led a feud program for the title. On February 4, 2004 he won the NWA World Tag Team Champion title with Abyss , which he had to give up after the team split up. In April he again won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Jarrett, but lost it on May 19, 2004 to Ron Killings. On June 9, 2004, he won the X-Division Championship in a match against Frankie Kazarian . On July 28, 2004, Jones lost the title to Shane and Kazarian.

By the end of 2004 he feuded with the group "Kings of Wrestling", where he formed a tag team with Randy Savage . Jones won the X-Division Championship again on January 16, 2005. During a feud program with Christopher Daniels, Jones lost the title to him on March 13, 2005 of the year. On May 15, 2005 Jones won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Jeff Jarrett for the third time at the major event TNA Hard Justice , before losing it to Raven on June 19 at Slammiversary . On September 11, 2005, he won the TNA X-Division Championship against Samoa Joe and Daniels for the fifth time at the TNA Unbreakable event . At TNA Turning Point 2005 Jones finally had to give up the title to Samoa Joe. From April 2005 he formed a team with Daniels and they won the NWA World Tag Team Champion title on June 18, 2006. They had to cede the Tag Team title to the Tag Team Latin American Exchange (LAX) on August 24, 2006 . Jones and Daniels won the rematch on September 24, 2006 at the TNA No Surrender event . On October 22, 2006, they lost their title at Bound for Glory again to LAX. He then briefly won the X-Division title a sixth time.

Various feuds and TNA World Heavyweight Champion (2007-2013)

In April 2007, Jones was made a member of Team Cage . Together with Travis Tomko he won the TNA World Tag Team Championship in October , which they lost to Super Eric and Kaz in April 2008.

At the 2009 TNA major No Surrender event , Jones first won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship by defeating reigning champions Kurt Angle , Matt Morgan , Sting and Hernandez . On April 19, 2010, Jones lost the title to Rob Van Dam .

Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the new Fortune group , which disbanded in October 2011. On July 13, 2010, he won the TNA iMPACT! from Rob Terry for the second time the TNA Global Championship , which he already held as the TNA Legends Championship . In the subsequent iMPACT! Editions, the title was renamed TNA Television Championship . At Final Resolution on December 5, 2010, he lost the title to Douglas Williams.

At Slammiversary X on June 10, 2012 Jones won the TNA World Tag Team Championship with Kurt Angle from Christopher Daniels and Kazarian, but lost him again at Impact Wrestling on June 28, 2012 to the same. After feuds against James Storm and Kurt Angle, Jones took part in the Bound for Glory Series , which he won. The following match against Bully Ray at Bound for Glory on October 20, 2013, he won and won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship for the second time . Shortly afterwards, Jones left TNA with the title and defended it on other promotions, although it was officially vacant. At the Impact Wrestling Records on December 5, 2013, he returned at short notice and lost a title union match against the now new champion Magnus . The contract then officially expired and Jones left TNA.

Return to ROH Wrestling (2013-2014)

In December 2013, Jones returned to the Ring of Honor . On January 4, 2014, he defeated Roderick Strong . At the 12th Anniversary Show , Jones successfully beat the Ring of Honor World Champion Jay Lethal . At All Star Extravaganza VII , Jones won a four-way match against Roderick Strong, Adam Cole and Michael Elgin , securing a chance at the ROH World Championship against Jay Lethal. On December 18, 2014 at Final Battle he lost in a match for the ROH World Championship against Jay Lethal and could not get the title. After the match, he left the Ring Of Honor.

New Japan Pro Wrestling (2014-2016)

Jones signed a contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling on March 27, 2014 . On his debut on April 6th, he attacked IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada . He has been named the new leader of the Bullet Club . He is the successor to Prince Devitt , who switched to World Wrestling Entertainment. On May 3, 2014 at Wrestling Dontaku 2014 he defeated Kazuchika Okada with the help of Yujiro Takahashi and won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship . Yujiro Takahashi thus joined the Bullet Club. Then he feuded against Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. On October 13, 2014 at King of Pro-Wrestling 2014 he lost his title to Hiroshi Tanahashi . On February 11, 2015 at The New Beginning 2015 he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi and was able to secure the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the second time. On July 5, 2015 at NJPW Dominion 7.5 , he lost his title to Kazuchika Okada. He also lost his rematch.

At G1 Climax 2015 he lost in the final of a tournament to determine a new challenger for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi. In November 2015 Jones challenged IWGP Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura to a title match. He injured himself and had to pause. He returned on January 4, 2016 and at Wrestle Kingdom he played an unsuccessful title match for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura. His last appearance for NJPW was on January 5, 2016 when the remaining members of the Bullet Club attacked their leader and threw them out of the stable. Kenny Omega became the new leader of the Bullet Club, succeeding Jones.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2016)

Debut and The Club (2016)

On the evening of January 24th, 2016, Jones surprisingly took part in the major event Royal Rumble , the wrestling league WWE. There he entered the ring as third, but was eliminated by Kevin Owens in the course of the evening . At the following RAW show on January 25, 2016, he was allowed to defeat Chris Jericho in a singles match and then feuded against him. He lost to Jericho in the subsequent Smackdown edition. He then defeated Jericho on February 21 at the PPV "Fastlane", which ended the feud. On the following Raw edition, he and Chris Jericho merged and have since formed the "Y2AJ" tag team.

On March 7, 2016, "Y2AJ" played a title match for the WWE Tag Team Championship against "The New Day" ( Kofi Kingston , Xavier Woods , Big E ), which they lost. After the match, Jericho turned away from Jones and attacked him. The feud continued until Wrestlemania 32, in which Jones and Jericho played a match in which Jericho won. At the "RAW After WrestleMania" on April 4, 2016, Jones won a Number One Contender Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens and Cesaro . He played a title match against Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Payback 2016 , which he lost. As the rivalry between Jones and Reigns progressed, his former Bullet Club colleagues from NJPW, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson , also made their debut . Together with Gallows and Anderson he formed the stable The Club . After the feud with Roman Reigns and the Usos ended, they feuded against John Cena . In the WWE Draft 2016 , which took place at the SmackDown edition on July 19, 2016, he was drafted to SmackDown , while Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows were drafted to Raw. With this draft the stable was separated or dissolved.

WWE Champion and various feuds (since 2016)

On September 11, 2016 at WWE Backlash , he defeated Dean Ambrose and won the WWE World Championship for the first time. On January 29, 2017 at the Royal Rumble he lost his title to John Cena.

At WrestleMania 33, Jones defeated his feud opponent Shane McMahon .

On July 8, 2017, at a live event at Madison Square Garden , he defeated Kevin Owens and won the WWE United States Championship for the first time . At the PPV "Battleground" he lost it again to Owens. Two days later at the following Smackdown edition, there was a triple-threat match for the WWE United States Championship between Jones, Owens and the returning Chris Jericho. Jones won this and became a two-time US champion.

On November 7, 2017, he played a match for the WWE Championship at a SmackDown LIVE edition and defeated the then reigning WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and thus became a two-time WWE Champion. After 371 days of reign, Jones lost the title to Daniel Bryan on November 13, 2018 .

As part of the 2019 Superstar Shake-Up, Jones switched from SmackDown to Raw on April 15, 2019. On July 14, 2019, he played a match for the WWE United States Championship against Ricochet , which he won and thus secured the United States Championship for the third time. On November 25th he played a match against Rey Mysterio for his United States Championship on Raw , he lost this match and the reign ended after 134 days. Styles drafted back to SmackDown on May 22, 2020. On June 12, 2020, Styles won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a tournament final against Daniel Bryan. The reign lasted 70 days and finally lost the title to Jeff Hardy on August 21, 2020 .
