Private life

Gutiérrez is married and has two children, whose names he has tattooed on the inside of his upper arms. He is the nephew of Rey Misterio Sr. and Super Astro and the cousin of El Hijo Rey Mysterio and Metalika.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Gutiérrez was trained in wrestling by his uncle, the wrestler Rey Mysterio Sr. He made his debut at the age of 14 in Tijuana , Mexico , as Gutiérrez was not yet allowed to acquire a license in the United States due to his young age . He took the ring name and mask from his uncle. Gutiérrez added the addition jr to the ring name . to build a bridge to his uncle.

Extreme Championship Wrestling (1995-1996)

He switched to Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1995 and made his first ring experience in the USA here.

World Championship Wrestling (1996-2001)

After a short time he switched to WCW and there he was unmasked in 1999 in the course of the storyline by Scott Hall and Kevin Nash .

Gutiérrez is the record holder of the WWE Cruiserweight Championship with five titles held at the WCW , which he won three times, a total of eight times, even after the takeover by the WWE. In 2001 he went back to Mexico for the time being, where, however, according to local traditions, he went unmasked due to the loss of his mask in WCW.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2002-2015)

World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio in his first reign in 2006.

Since 2002 he was active in the United States for World Wrestling Entertainment . Gutiérrez became a crowd favorite there. When Gutiérrez was allowed to win the Royal Rumble in 2006, the WWE set a record: Gutiérrez was allowed to participate in the match for a duration of 1:02:15 hours. It was followed by his greatest success at WrestleMania 22 in April of the same year, in which he won the World Heavyweight Champion in a triple-threat match against Kurt Angle and Randy Orton . Gutiérrez has also won the WWE cruiserweight title three times and held the tag team title four times together with Edge , Rob Van Dam , Eddie Guerrero and Batista . On July 23, 2006 Gutiérrez lost the world heavyweight title to King Booker .

After a few injury breaks, he came back in June 2008 and switched to the Monday show RAW . There he began a feud program with Kane and was then involved in the action for the WWE Intercontinental title , which he was allowed to win in April 2009 at WrestleMania 25 against JBL . At the WWE Draft 2009 Gutiérrez moved back to SmackDown. On June 7, 2009, he lost the Extreme Rules title to Chris Jericho . At The Bash on June 28, 2009, he won the title back. On September 1, 2009 he lost the title again to John Morrison . The background was that he was suspended for 30 days because of a violation of the so-called wellness program , the drug and medication regulation of the WWE, and was also able to do so

At the Fatal 4 Way PPV on June 21, 2010 Gutiérrez became World Heavyweight Champion for the second time , after which he prevailed in the match against Jack Swagger , The Big Show and CM Punk . At Money In The Bank , however, he lost the title to Kane, who redeemed his Money In The Bank suitcase . On April 25, 2011, he was the 2011 WWE draft to RAW - Roster drafted. Gutiérrez won the vacant WWE Championship in a tournament on July 25, 2011 . He first defeated Dolph Ziggler in the quarterfinals on July 18, 2011 and R-Truth in the semifinals . In the final on July 25th, he prevailed against The Miz . Gutiérrez lost the title to John Cena at the same event . He then paused due to a knee injury. On April 26, 2012 Gutiérrez was suspended for 60 days for his second violation of the WWE wellness program. He returned from injury break on July 16, 2012. On February 26, 2015, Gutiérrez's WWE .com profile was moved to the site's alumni section. Thus Rey Mysterio was no longer under contract with the WWE.

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (2015-2016, 2018)

On March 3, 2015 it was announced that Rey Mysterio was able to reach an agreement with AAA to a contract and under the ring name Rey Mysterio Jr. on March 18 along with Myzteziz against El Hijo del Perro Aguayo and Pentagon Jr. will compete.

On March 20, 2015 there was a rematch between Mysterio and Aguayo Jr., in which Manik and Xtreme Tiger also competed. During the match there was an accident in which Aguayo Jr. collapsed in the ring ropes after some actions by Mysterios. The fight went on for about a minute while the wrestler and promoter Konnan who was present at the ring tried to give first aid. Aguayo's medical care was inadequate, among other things because the ring doctor was treating another injured fighter behind the scenes and the stretcher necessary to stabilize the neck was occupied. Aguayo later died of the consequences of the injury.

Lucha Underground (2015-2018)

On December 12, 2015, Rey Mysterio first appeared on the television program Lucha Underground , where he briefly held the Lucha Underground Trios Championship with Dragon Azteca Jr. and Prince Puma .

Return to WWE (since 2018)

On January 28, 2018, Rey Mysterio surprisingly returned to the PPV Royal Rumble when he moved into the Rumble as 27th.

At the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27, 2018, Mysterio appeared again in a Battle Royale. It was the biggest rumble so far with 50 participants, but it was not Mysterio with the longest time in the rumble, as was previously in 2006, but Daniel Bryan , who would have broken Mysterio's record with his length of stay if he had won the rumble.

In the October 9, 2018 issue of Smackdown, his return to the weekly show was announced for the coming week. He made his comeback on October 16 at SmackDown 1000. Since his return, he has denied small feuds such as against Randy Orton and Andrade, and he has also been involved in the WWE United States Championship .

As part of the Superstar Shake-Up 2019, Mysterio switched from SmackDown to Raw on April 15, 2019 . He continued his feud against Samoa Joe for the WWE United States Championship , so Mysterio got the chance to win the title at Money in the Bank again , Mysterio won this match and was finally able to secure the championship, so he reached the Grand Slam . This reign lasted only 15 days and eventually gave up the title due to a collarbone fracture.

On November 25, 2019, Mysterio won his second WWE United States Championship from AJ Styles . On December 26, 2019, he lost the title to Andrade at a live event .

Wrestling style

Due to his small body size and weight, Gutiérrez has to show very fast and spectacular-looking actions in the ring, such as his trademark the so-called 619 , in order to gain the interest of the audience and to maintain credibility. But this is exactly where the danger lies, because these high-flying actions pose a particular risk of injury.
