The WWE Cruiserweight Championship was a cruiserweight title that the wrestling organization WWE took over after buying up WCW and only awarded it to the cruiserweight division. The title officially had a weight limit of 97.5 kg (215 lbs ). The title was discontinued on March 3, 2008. On September 14, 2016, the WWE Cruiserweight Championship was introduced as a successor. As is common in wrestling, the award was made according to a previously determined storyline .

history

After the title was presented in 1990, the first WCW Light Heavyweight Champion was determined in a tournament . On October 27, 1991 Brian Pillman won the tournament and became the first title holder. When the then title holder Brad Armstrong was injured in 1992 and had to give up the title, the WCW discontinued the title.

After the title was presented in 1996, the first WCW Cruiserweight Champion was determined in a tournament . On March 20, 1996, Shinjiro Otani won the tournament against Wild Pegasus and became the first title holder. Since the WWE , unlike the WCW , recognizes the two titles as one, the first title holder is Brian Pillman .

After the purchase of WCW , the WCW Cruiserweight Championship was defended within the WWE . A title association at the Survivor Series event against the then WWF Light Heavyweight Champion X-Pac was canceled because X-Pac sustained an injury. The WWE then adopted the WCW Cruiserweight Championship as its own version of the Cruiserweight Championship and discontinued the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship .

After the takeover of WCW, the WWE, which had been renamed because of a legal dispute with the World Wildlife Fund , was divided into two cadres, Raw and SmackDown , in order to be able to divide the majority of the players after the purchase of WCW. The title was assigned to SmackDown and renamed the WWE Cruiserweight Championship . On September 28, 2007 the title was declared vacant after Hornswoggle was revoked . and has not been mentioned since. The title was officially discontinued 6 months later.
