WCW Greed was the final pay-per-view (PPV) of the wrestling promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It took place on March 18, 2001 at the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum in Jacksonville , Florida . With a PPV buy rate of just 0.10, it represented a low point in the history of WCW. Greed replaced the PPV Uncensored, which was always held in March from 1995 to 2000.

background

WCW Greed was to be the final PPV of World Championship Wrestling as a stand-alone promotion. After years of fighting with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), the then market leader bought up the promotion. Only three days after the PPV the last broadcast of WCW Thunder took place, eight days later the last WCW Monday Nitro edition, in which this was announced to the public.

prehistory

WCW was in serious financial trouble prior to the JPA. Bischoff himself tried to buy the company and had suggested various financing options. The original plan was a fresh start based on making Scott Steiner the top heel of the promotion and then taking one baby face at a time off the show. Only Diamond Dallas Page should be left at WCW Greed . The next day the new owners of the WCW should introduce themselves and bring back all baby faces. This should bring about the necessary U-turn for the doctorate. But things turned out differently, Bischoff's financing plan was too uncertain for Turner Broadcasting System , and some investors jumped out after they had inspected the books. Jamie Kellner became the new CEO of Turner Broadcasting and shortly thereafter announced that he would want to end wrestling on Turner's programs.

Matches

From the original plan, the main event was retained, in which WCW World Heavyweight Championship Scott Steiner took on Diamond Dallas Page. The tournament final for the newly introduced WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship was also prepared .

reception

Despite the low buy rate of only 0.1 (around 50,000 viewers), there are at least three outstanding matches on the card. Dave Meltzer rated three of the ten matches with 3 to 4 points (recommended). John Bills from What Culture put it similarly, who viewed the event critically in the aftermath. According to him, WCW Greed was to be noted that the WCW was coming to an end.
