The WCW World Heavyweight Championship was the main title of World Championship Wrestling . Introduced on January 11, 1991, the title was only given to male individual wrestlers. On December 9, 2001, the title was combined with the WWF Championship .
history
On January 11, 1991 Ric Flair defeated Sting in a title match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship . Flair has now been recognized by the WCW as a WCW World Heavyweight Champion in addition to his role as NWA World Heavyweight Champion . The two titles continued to be represented by the previous NWA title belt, the Big Gold Belt .
On July 1, 1991, the reigning champion Flair left the WCW and switched to the WWF . He kept the Big Gold Belt because WCW did not repay the 25,000 US dollars Flair had deposited as a deposit for the title belt. The WCW was then forced to create its own title belt for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship . The first wearer of the new title belt was Lex Luger .
WCW sued Flair for using the Big Gold Belt in the rival league WWF. An out-of-court settlement was later reached and WCW repurchased the title from Flair for $ 38,000.
In September 1993, the WCW separated from the NWA after other NWA member promotions complained that the NWA World Heavyweight Championship was not available for them. Thereupon the NWA declared the title for vacant and recognized the reigning title holder Ric Flair , the title. Nevertheless, the WCW retained the Big Gold Belt and continued to list Flair as the WCW International World Heavyweight Champion . The WCW International World Heavyweight Regencies are not officially recognized by the NWA and the WWE.
In 1993, Flair, who returned to WCW, won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from Vader . The WCW decided to combine the titles through a match between the then title holder Ric Flair and the then WCW International World Heavyweight Champion Sting. Flair won the match and thus combined the two titles, taking the name of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and the Big Gold Belt .
After the WCW's quotas continued to fall, it was bought up by the WWF in March 2001. Only four WCW titles remained active, including the WCW World Heavyweight Championship , henceforth called the WCW Championship . When the storyline invasion of WCW was completed and it was officially dismantled, the title was renamed World Championship . The World Championship was combined with the WWF Championship at the PPV event Vengeance on December 9, 2001 after Chris Jericho defeated the then World Champion The Rock and then the then WWF Champion Steve Austin and thus the two world heavyweight championships of the two largest wrestling promotions held at the same time. When the titles were merged, the Undisputed Championship inherited the WWF Championship cover story , which led to the deactivation of the World Championship .
