Cook County was formed as the 54th County in Illinois on January 15, 1831 from Putnam County and named after Daniel Pope Cook , one of the first representatives and first attorney general of Illinois. In 1831 around 100 people lived in this area. In 1900 there were already 1.8 million living here, and in 1970 the previous high of 5.492 million was achieved.

The first settler in what is now Chicago's urban area was probably Jean Baptiste Point du Sable from Santo Domingo in 1779 . He built the first fortified settlement in the area of today's DuSable Bridge and the Noth Bank . He was married to a local Indian. His marriage is believed to be the first in the Chicago area. The first white settler was Québec- born John Kinzie , an Indian trader who built his trading post in 1804 at the mouth of the Chicago River .

The good location on Lake Michigan, the early built port, the trade routes across the lake, the connection through the Des Plaines River to the Mississippi River were the first guarantees for an up-and-coming county. The Galena & Chicago Union was the first railroad company to build smaller lines. In 1849 Chicago had developed into the second largest railroad builder and became an industrial location. Just three years later, the mass of transported goods had overtaken that of steam ships. In 1895 one could reach downtown Chicago with 38 different railroad lines.
