Northfield is located in northeast Illinois 5.5 km west of Lake Michigan in the north of the greater Chicago area .
The Illinois State Route 43 , which runs in a north-south direction, runs through Northfield . On the western edge of the town runs parallel to the Interstate 94 and the congruent US Highway 41 , which form the fastest connection between Chicago and Milwaukee , the largest city in Wisconsin .
Northfield is 21 miles north of Chicago. The Wisconsin border is 32 miles north of Milwaukee and is 115 miles north.
