history
In the area around today's Roselle, white settlers settled next to the Potawatomi who lived there from the early 1830s. Silas L. Meacham and his brothers Harvey and Lyman settled where Bloomingdale Township is today. The government had offered them land for $ 1.25 / acre . In 1837 the deacon Elijah Hough and his wife settled there with their sons Oramel and Rosell (sic!) And their daughter Cornelia.
The area had developed into an agricultural growing area for maize and flax in 1868 . That year, Rosell Hough, who had made a career as a councilor and businessman in Chicago, founded the Illinois Linen Company on the northwest corner of what is now the intersection of Roselle Road and Irving Park Road. Hough was also president of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad Company. Rumor has it that he paid money to have a land survey changed so that a railway line ran through Roselle, Itasca and Wood Dale instead of Addison and Bloomingdale . There was later a printing error in the train schedule, which led to Roselle's current name.
