DuPage County was formed in 1839. It was named after a French family of traders who lived in Kaskaskia in the 18th century .
Naperville was the county seat until 1867 . Only then did it become Wheaton.
When the first settlers from Europe settled here, they changed the landscape. They felled the trees because they needed their wood for their houses and for trading. The natural flora was removed to allow crops and vegetables to be planted. These changes destroyed the natural habitat of the forest animals that the Indians needed to live and trade. Since the new settlers also fenced off their fields, the Indians were no longer as free as before.
Incursions by the Indians on the new colonists in DuPage County are not recorded, but the colonists fled an attack by the Indians at Fort Dearborn in Chicago in 1832 and only returned after a month when Fort Payne was built near them . The fort stood on the site of today's North Central College training ground . In 1833 the rest of the Indians signed a contract of sale in which they sold their land. First sawmills were built, followed by flour mills, inns and horse changing stations for travelers. In 1859 the first railway connection to the Galena & Chicago Union was built, so that easy trips to Chicago and Galena were possible.
