The county is located in southern Illinois on the Ohio River , which forms the border with Kentucky to the east and south . It has an area of 470 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Hardin County:

history
Hardin County was formed on March 1, 1839 from parts of Pope County and Gallatin County. It was named after John Hardin (1753–1792), an officer in the Continental Army during the American War of Independence .
The first administrative seat was in McFarlan's Ferry, which was later renamed Elizabethtown, after McFarlan's wife Elizabeth. He was also the first to build a brick building with a view over the Ohio River in 1812 , as was the Rose Hotel , which was extensively restored in 1998 and is now the oldest hotel in Illinois.
