In Alexander County, near Cairo, at the confluence of the Ohio River and Mississippi River, the deepest and southernmost point of the state of Illinois is located.
The western border of the county is formed by the Mississippi and is also the border with the state of Missouri . The Ohio forms with the southern border of the county also the border with Kentucky .

history
Alexander County is the first county formed after the founding of the new state of Illinois. Governor Shadrach Bond signed the charter on March 4, 1819. The first white settlements go back to 1805.
The county was named after William M. Alexander , a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .
In 1843 the eastern part of the county became Pulaski County.
Thebes was the seat of county administration from 1846 to 1859 , after which it became Cairo.
The first courthouse was completed in 1865 and served as such until 1963.
