history
Marion County was formed on January 24, 1823 from parts of Jefferson and Fayette Counties. It was named after Francis Marion , an officer in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .
The first settlers in 1811 were Samuel Young and his son, whose house had been completely destroyed in the great earthquake in Missouri on November 16, 1811 , who were looking for a new home. At the time, Illinois was not a state. In 1813 he had his family come and in the spring of 1814 they planted the first seeds.
