history
Lee County was formed on February 27, 1839 from the southern portion of Ogle County and parts of Bond County and Clark County. It was named after Richard Henry Lee , a US statesman and US Senator from Virginia or after Henry Lee , a cavalry officer of the American Revolutionary War, politician, governor of Virginia and author.
In 1830 John Dixon took the ferry across the Rock River with several other people and covered wagons and settled on the opposite side. This was the hour of birth of the city of Dixon. Dixon's Ferry was an important point as the Rock River could only be crossed at this point for 80 km upstream and downstream. In 1846 John Deere , founder of the later tractor factory of the same name, came to the county and founded a small factory that made steel plows and other agricultural implements. 10 years later he was producing 1,000 plows a year.
Ronald Reagan , who was born in neighboring Whiteside County , attended high school in the county town of Dixon .
