Marshall County was formed on January 19, 1839 from parts of Bond and Clark Counties. It was named after John Marshall (1755-1835), a member of the US House of Representatives (1799-1800), Secretary of State (1800-1801) and longtime Chief Justice of the United States (1801-1835).

According to the 2010 census , Marshall County had 12,640 people in 5,061 households. The population density was 12.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.45 people lived in 5061 households.
