White County was formed on December 9, 1815 from parts of Gallatin County. It was named after Leonard White.

The first white settlers came to what would later become the county between 1807 and 1809, and settled near the Little Wabash River . These first settlers came from North and South Carolina , Kentucky, and Tennessee .

In 1814 the Carmi settlement was founded. In 1925, the county was almost completely destroyed by a tornado that claimed the most deaths in US history.

As of the 2010 census , White County had 14,665 people in 6,464 households. The population density was 11.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.23 people lived in each of the 6,464 households.

The racial the population was composed of 98.0 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.3 percent of the population, regardless of ethnicity.

21.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.6 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 39,728  USD . The per capita income was $ 22,081. 14.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
