history
Edwards County was formed from Gallatin County in 1814 and named after Ninian Edwards , the only governor of the Illinois Territory . The first seat of the county government was Palmyra in what is now Wabash County . The first settlers came from Bristol in England and landed in Philadelphia on May 25, 1818 , whereby not all of them made the arduous journey to Edwards County, but settled in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. More settlers came from the US east coast.
