The county is located in northeast Illinois and borders Indiana to the east . It has an area of 1765 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water.
The shortest connection from Chicago to Memphis runs through the county, located around 70 kilometers south of Chicago , with Interstate 57 .

Rivers
The Kankakee River , one of the two headwaters of the Illinois River, flows through the county in an east-west direction . In the center of the county flows into the Iroquois River, also from Indiana, the largest tributary of the Kankakee River.
history
Long before the first white settlers arrived here in 1834, this was the area of the Pottawatomi Indians.
The Kankakee County was formed on February 11, 1853 from the southern part of Will County and the northern part of Iroquois County. The county was named after the Kankakee River .
In 1855 the county got a connection to the railroad through the Illinois Central Railroad and in 1900 had about 13,500 inhabitants. So far, three Illinois governors have come from Kankakee County: Len Small , Samuel H. Shapiro, and George Ryan .
