Samuel H. Shapiro

Samuel Harvey Shapiro (born April 25, 1907 in Estonia , † March 16, 1987 in Kankakee , Illinois ) was an American politician and from 1968 to 1969 the 34th governor of Illinois.

Early years

Born in Estonia under the name Israel Shapiro , the boy immigrated to America very early. There he studied law at the University of Illinois . After passing his exams and being admitted to the bar, he practiced in Kankatee, Illinois. He soon became a district attorney for Kankakee County .

Political rise

As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected lieutenant governor of Illinois in 1960 and 1964 . After the resignation of Governor Otto Kerner , Shapiro became Governor of Illinois on May 21, 1968. His task was to end his predecessor's term of office, which ran until January 1969. He ran for re-election in 1968, but was defeated by his Republican challenger Richard Ogilvie .

Another résumé

After his election defeat and the end of his tenure, Shapiro withdrew into his private life and went back to work as a lawyer. He died in 1987.
