William Bross

William Bross (born November 4, 1813 in Port Jervis , Orange County , New York , †  January 27, 1890 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

In 1838, William Bross graduated from Williams College . He then began a long career in the newspaper industry. He was the co-founder, editor-in-chief, and president of the Chicago Tribune newspaper . He was also a curator of Lake Forest College . Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In 1864, Bross was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside Richard James Oglesby . He held this office between January 16, 1865 and January 11, 1869. He was Deputy Governor . After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he no longer appeared politically. He died on January 27, 1890 in Chicago, where he was buried.
