John Henry body
John Henry Stelle (born August 8, 1891 in McLeansboro , Illinois , † July 5, 1962 ) was an American politician and from 1940 to 1941 the 29th governor of Illinois.
Early years
John Stelle attended the Western Military Academy and then studied law at Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri . There he made his law exam in 1916, after which he practiced as a lawyer in his hometown. During the First World War he was with the National Guard, which was subordinate to the US Army during the war , in France , where he was wounded. After completing his military service, he worked in various professions for several years before turning to politics.
Political career
As a member of the Democratic Party , he was a delegate to almost all Democratic National Conventions between 1928 and 1960. From the mid-1930s he was politically active in Illinois. From 1935 to 1937 he was Treasurer and since 1937 Deputy Governor ( lieutenant governor ) of his state. After the death of the incumbent governor Henry Horner on October 6, 1940, he had to take over the office of governor until the end of the term of office on January 13, 1941. During this time he replaced some of the incumbents appointed by Horner with his political friends. After the end of his brief tenure, Stelle withdrew from politics. He was dedicated to his business interests and served on the boards of several companies. John Steller died in 1962.
