Fred Sterling

Frederick E. "Fred" Sterling (born June 29, 1869 in Dixon , Illinois , † February 10, 1934 in Rockford , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1933 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

Sterling worked at Rockford as a newspaper publisher and editor. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1912 and 1920 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions . Between 1914 and 1916 he was a member of his party's state executive. In 1916 he was President of the Republicans in Illinois. From 1919 to 1921 he was State Treasurer of his state's Treasury.

In 1920 Sterling was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside Len Small . He held this office between January 10, 1921 and January 9, 1933. From 1929 he served under the new Governor Louis Lincoln Emmerson . He was the governor's deputy . Sterling was confirmed in office in 1924 and 1928. Fred Sterling was also a member of the Freemasons and some of their subgroups.
