Elmer J. Hoffman

Elmer Joseph Hoffman (born July 7, 1899 in Wheaton , Illinois , †  June 25, 1976 ibid) was an American politician . From 1959 to 1965 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elmer Hoffman attended public schools in his home country. During the First World War he served in an artillery unit of the US Army , which was deployed in France . After that he helped his father run his farm. At the same time he ran his own truck haulage company from 1919 to 1930. From 1930 to 1938 he worked as a police officer in DuPage County . From 1939 to 1950 he worked there as police chief ( sheriff ), at times also as deputy chief of police. In 1951 he worked in administration at the probate court in DuPage County. From 1952 to 1959 he was State Treasurer of Illinois. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1958 congressional election , Hoffman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded the late Russell W. Keeney on January 3, 1959 . Re-elected twice, he completed three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1965 . These were shaped by the events of the civil rights movement and the beginning of the Vietnam War . In 1964 he declined to run again.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Hoffman no longer appeared politically. He died on June 25, 1976 in Wheaton, where he was also buried.
