Anthony L. Knapp

Anthony Lausett Knapp (born June 14, 1828 in Middletown , Orange County , New York , †  May 24, 1881 in Springfield , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1865 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Anthony Knapp was the older brother of Congressman Robert M. Knapp (1831-1889). In 1839 he moved to Jerseyville , Illinois with his parents . He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in Jerseyville. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1859 and 1861 he was a member of the Illinois Senate .

After the resignation of MP John Alexander McClernand , Knapp was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the sixth seat of Illinois , where he took up his new mandate on December 12, 1861. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1865 . Since 1863 he represented the then newly established tenth electoral district of his state. This time was marked by the events of the civil war . In 1864 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Anthony Knapp moved to Chicago in 1865 and to Springfield in 1867, where he practiced as a lawyer. He died in Springfield on May 24, 1881.
