Claude U. Stone

Claudius Ulysses "Claude" Stone (born May 11, 1879 in Menard County , Illinois , †  November 13, 1957 in Peoria , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Claude Stone attended the public schools in his home country and the Western Normal College in Bushnell . Then he began a career in school service. First he was a teacher in Menard County, then for two years school council in Brimfield . During the Spanish-American War of 1898 he was a corporal in an infantry unit from Illinois. He was stationed in Cuba until May 1899 . Between 1902 and 1910, Stone served as a school councilor in Peoria County . He was also president of the Illinois School Councils Association. After studying law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and at George Washington University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1909, he began working in this profession in Peoria.

Politically, Stone joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1910 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 16th  constituency of Illinois, where he succeeded Joseph V. Graff on March 4, 1911 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1917 . During this time the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. In 1916 he was not re-elected.

Between 1917 and 1920 Stone was a post holder in Peoria. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1928 to 1925 he held the post of Master in Chancery at the District Court in Peoria County. He also published the Peoria Star newspaper between 1938 and 1949 . He died in Peoria on November 13, 1957.
