Granville Barrere

Granville Barrere (born July 11, 1829 in New Market , Highland County , Ohio , †  January 13, 1889 in Canton , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Granville Barrere was a nephew of Congressman Nelson Barrere (1808-1883) from Ohio. He attended public schools in his home country and Augusta College in Kentucky and Marietta College in Ohio. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to work in Marion ( Arkansas ) in this profession. In 1855 he moved to Bloomington , Illinois. In the same year he moved his residence and his law firm to Canton. In his new home he became a member of the education committee and the local council.

Politically, Barrere joined the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat Thompson W. McNeely on March 4, 1873 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1874, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Granville Barrere practiced as a lawyer again. He died on January 13, 1889 in Canton, where he was buried.
