John I. Rinaker

John Irving Rinaker (born November 1, 1830 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  January 15, 1915 in Eustis , Florida ) was an American politician . In 1896 and 1897 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1836, John Rinaker moved to Springfield , Illinois with his parents . He attended Illinois College for a year and then McKendree College in Lebanon . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1854, he began to work in this profession in Carlinville . During the Civil War he assembled an infantry regiment from Illinois, which he himself commanded as a colonel. By the end of the war he achieved the rank of Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army . After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1876 and 1884 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions . Between 1885 and 1889 he was chairman of the Railroad and Warehouse Commissioners of Illinois .

In the congressional elections of 1894, Rinaker was defeated by the Democrat Finis E. Downing . But he appealed against the election result. When this was complied with, he was able to take over the mandate from Downing on June 5, 1896 and end the current legislative period in Congress by March 3, 1897 . In 1896 it was not confirmed. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Rinaker practiced again as a lawyer. He died on January 15, 1915 in Eustis and was buried in Carlinville.
