James R. Campbell

James Romulus Campbell (born May 4, 1853 in McLeansboro , Illinois , †  August 12, 1924 there ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Campbell attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1877, he began to work in McLeansboro in this profession. Between 1870 and 1898 he was also the owner and editor of a daily newspaper there. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1884 and 1888 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives ; from 1888 to 1896 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional elections of 1896 Campbell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Republican Orlando Burrell on March 4, 1897 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1898, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . James Campbell took part in the war as an officer in an infantry unit from Illinois. He then remained in the military until 1901. He was stationed as brigadier general in the Philippines . After his return to McLeansboro, he worked there in the milling business and in banking. He died on August 12, 1924.
