Edward M. Irwin
Edward Michael Irwin (born April 14, 1869 in Leasburg , Crawford County , Missouri , † January 30, 1933 in Belleville , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Edward Irwin attended the public schools of his home country and then taught for some time in Leasburg as a teacher. He then studied at the University of Missouri in Columbia . After studying medicine at Missouri Medical College in St. Louis and his admission as a doctor in 1892, he began to work in this profession, first in New Athens (Illinois) and then from 1903 in Belleville. Between 1904 and 1908 he was a coroner in St. Clair County . In 1910 he became President of Belleville Bank & Trust Co. At the same time, he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1898 to 1924, Irwin was the Republican District Chairman in St. Clair County. In June 1920, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Warren G. Harding was nominated as a candidate for president.
In the 1924 congressional election , Irwin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 22nd constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Edward E. Miller on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . From 1929 he was chairman of the Committee on Claims . Edward Irwin was not re-elected in 1930. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a doctor again. He died in Belleville on January 30, 1933.
