Thomas Fisher "Tom" Railsback (born January 22, 1932 in Moline , Illinois , † January 20, 2020 in Mesa , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1983 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Railsback attended public schools in his home country and then until 1954 Grinnell College in Iowa . After studying law at the School of Law at Northwestern University in Chicago and being admitted to the bar in 1957, he began working in this profession, having served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959 . He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1962 to 1966 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .

In the 1966 congressional election , Railsback was elected to the 19th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Gale Schisler on January 3, 1967 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . During this period, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair fell - Railsback was on the Justice Committee of the House of Representatives and was one of those Republican MPs who voted for President Richard Nixon's impeachment . In 1982 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

Since leaving Congress, Tom Railsback has been a lobbyist in the telecommunications industry.
