John C. Sherwin

John Crocker Sherwin (born February 8, 1838 in Governor , St. Lawrence County , New York , †  January 1, 1904 in Benton Harbor , Michigan ) was an American politician . From 1879 to 1883 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Sherwin attended public schools in his home country and then Lombard College in Galesburg, Illinois. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He served intermittently as a county clerk in Kane County and a lawyer for the city of Aurora . During the Civil War he served in an Illinois infantry unit in the Union Army .

Politically, Sherwin became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded William Lathrop on March 4, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Sherwin practiced as a lawyer again. He died on January 1, 1904 in Benton Harbor and was buried in Aurora.
