Thomas A. Boyd

Thomas Alexander Boyd (born June 25, 1830 in Bedford , Adams County , Pennsylvania , †  May 28, 1897 in Lewistown , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Boyd attended public schools in his home country. In 1848 he graduated from Marshall College in Mercersburg . After a subsequent law degree in Chambersburg and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Bedford in this profession. In 1856 he relocated his residence and law firm to Lewistown, Illinois. During the Civil War , he served as a captain in an Illinois infantry regiment that was part of the Union Army . After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Illinois Senate from 1866 to 1877 .

In the congressional elections of 1876 Boyd was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Richard H. Whiting on March 4, 1877 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1881 . In 1880 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Thomas Boyd practiced as a lawyer again. He died on May 28, 1897 in Lewistown, where he was also buried.
