Walter Nesbit

Walter Nesbit (born May 1, 1875 in Belleville , Illinois ; †  December 6, 1938 there ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Nesbit attended the public schools in his home country as well as some evening schools. Between 1892 and 1912 he worked in coal mining. In the United Mine Workers of America union, he held various positions until 1933. Among other things, he worked as a treasurer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1932 congressional elections , Nesbit was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded William H. Dieterich on March 4, 1933 . Since he was not confirmed in 1934, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1935 . During this time, the first of the Federal Government's New Deal laws were passed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . In 1935, the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Walter Nesbit founded the Club Congress in Belleville. In 1938 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of sheriff in St. Clair County . He died on December 6th of the same year in Belleville, where he was buried.
