William E. McVey
William Estus McVey (born December 13, 1885 in Clinton County , Ohio , † August 10, 1958 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1958 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William McVey was born on a farm near the small town of Lee's Creek in southwest Ohio. He attended the public schools in his home country. Between 1908 and 1914 he was in the Philippines , which was then part of the United States, department head in the Department of Education. He studied at Ohio University until 1916 and then at the University of Chicago until 1919 . Between 1919 and 1947 he was head of two schools in Harvey, Illinois. He also served as president of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1943 and 1944 . From 1948 to 1950 he taught at DePaul UniversityPedagogy. He was also the author of several treatises.
Politically, McVey became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1950 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth constituency of Illinois, where he succeeded Democrat James V. Buckley on January 3, 1951 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on August 10, 1958 . During this time the Korean War fell and the civil rights movement began . At the time of his death, William McVey had already been nominated for another re-election. He was buried in Galesburg .
