James Stewart Martin

James Stewart Martin (born August 19, 1826 in Scott County , Virginia , †  November 20, 1907 in Salem , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now Gate City , James Martin attended public schools in his home country and Emory and Henry College . In 1846 he moved to Salem, Illinois. During the Mexican-American War , Martin served in an Illinois volunteer regiment. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1861, he began to work in this profession in Salem. In the meantime he was employed as a clerk in the administration of Marion County . During the Civil War he was a colonel in an Illinois infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . In the further course of the war he made it up to the Brevet Brigadier General. Martin remained in the military until June 7, 1865. He then became a district judge in Marion County. In 1869 he was employed by the Federal Pension Administration as a pension agent .

Politically, Martin was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the then newly established 16th  constituency of Illinois , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1873. Since he was not confirmed in 1874, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1879 James Martin became state commissioner for the Southern Illinois Penitentiary , the penitentiary responsible for the southern part of the state of Illinois. He died in Salem on November 20, 1907.
