John M. Crebs

John Montgomery Crebs (born April 9, 1830 in Middleburg , Virginia , †  June 26, 1890 in Carmi , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1873 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1837, John Crebs and his parents came to White County , Illinois, where he attended public schools. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession in his new home. During the civil war he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Union army . In the course of the war he took part in the Second Vicksburg Campaign . He also temporarily commanded a cavalry brigade. After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 Crebs was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Republican Green Berry Raum on March 4, 1869 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1873 . In 1872 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, John Crebs worked again as a lawyer. He died in Carmi on June 26, 1890.
