Middleburg is a city in Loudoun County , Virginia , United States .
history
Middleburg was founded in 1787 by Levin Powell, a revolutionary lieutenant colonel and statesman in Virginia. He bought the land for around $ 6 an acre from Joseph Chinn , a cousin of George Washington . Powell changed the original name "Chinn's Crossroads" to Middleburg, as the city was halfway between Alexandria and Winchester on the Ashby's Gap trade route. Today US Highway 50 runs along there.
There are several inns in town, including the Red Fox Inn and Tavern, which is said to be the "oldest original inn in America". The Red Fox Tavern was a meeting place for Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his rangers. A century later, President Kennedy's secretary, Pierre Salinger , held press conferences there.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, Middleburg has welcomed visitors who came to the city for fox hunting and hunting races. The enchanting village soon earned the reputation as the "horse and hunting capital of the nation" and attracted famous visitors from all over the country.
Famous residents of the city included Jackie Kennedy , Elizabeth Taylor (when she was married to Senator John Warner ), Jack Kent Cooke, and Alice du Pont Mills .
