Unison (Virginia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unison is a civil parish in southwest Loudoun County , Virginia . It comprises around 20 properties on an area of around 0.28 km² and is located around 8 kilometers from Middleburg in the Loudoun Valley .

The then 8 hectare area was founded in 1813 and was given the name Unison , which is still valid today, in 1829 , originally it was called Union . The reason for the name change were problems with the postal authority, which did not tolerate two cities of the same name in the same state. There was a place in Virginia called Union even before the area was founded.

Although there were settlements in the area as early as the 18th century, most of the buildings in Unison weren't built until after 1802. Shortly after the establishment of the area, Unison experienced its most successful period: It served the surrounding rural areas as a commercial, religious and social center. Because it was miles from main roads and railroad lines showed very limited growth during the second half of the 19th century, the area was later preserved.

In Unison there is a Methodist Church , a former school and a saddle maker . Until 1996 there was a retail store, the Union Store, which is now office space.

Unison has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003 .
