Aldie

Aldie is a civil parish in Loudoun County , Virginia located on the John Mosby Highway ( US Highway 50 ) between Gilbert's Corner and Middleburg .

Aldie was laid out in 1810 by Charles F. Mercer , who named his property after Castle Aldie, the ancestral home of his Scottish ancestors. Aldie has a number of historic shops, houses, and the Aldie Mill, the only known and surviving water mill in Virginia that was powered by two water wheels. Aldie holds a harvest festival every October.

The National Register of Historic Places includes the Aldie Mill Historic District with the water mill built in 1807 on US Route 50, the Loudoun Agricultural and Mechanical Institute on Route 650, and the Mount Zion Old School Baptist Church (1851) on US Route 50 registered.

Julia Beckwith Neale, the mother of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, was born in Aldie.

During the American Civil War , Aldie and the surrounding areas to the west and northwest were the site of the Battle of Aldie .
