history

Britain, originally known as Guinea , was an African American settlement in the mid-19th century . In 1880 the Mount Sinai Free Baptist Church was built, which served as a school until 1915 . Unlike most of Loudoun County's African American settlements, Britain had a post office. Afro-American residents of the village began to relocate to other places in the early 20th century, with the last families leaving Britain in the 1920s.
