Charles W. Vursell
Charles Wesley Vursell (born February 8, 1881 in Salem , Illinois , † September 21, 1974 there ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1959 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Charles Vursell was a cousin of Carl Albert (1908-2000), Speaker of the House of Representatives from Oklahoma . He attended the public schools in his home country and from 1904 worked as a hardware dealer . Between 1910 and 1914 he served as a sheriff in Marion County . Between 1916 and 1948, Vursell was the owner and editor of the Salem Republican newspaper . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1914 and 1916 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .
In the 1942 congressional election , Vursell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat Laurence F. Arnold on January 3, 1943 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . Between 1949 and 1953 he represented the 24th district of his state there. His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .
In 1958, Charles Vursell was not re-elected. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died on September 21, 1974 in his hometown of Salem.
