Philip G. "Phil" Hare (born February 21, 1949 in Galesburg , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 2007 and 2011 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Phil Hare grew up in Rock Island and attended Alleman High School there until 1967 . In 1967 and 1968 he graduated from Black Hawk Community College in Moline . Between 1969 and 1975 he was a member of the United States Army Reserve . Between 1969 and 1982, Hare was a full-time worker in a clothing factory in Rock Island. During this time he became a local union leader. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1983 and 2006 he was on the staff of Congressman Lane Evans .

In the 2006 congressional election , Hare was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Evans on January 3, 2007. After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2011 . In 2010 he was defeated by Republican Bobby Schilling . Like his predecessor Evans, Hare was considered a Liberal Congressman. He advocated a reform of the health system and the interests of workers and trade unions. He was a member of the Labor and Education Committee and the Transport and Infrastructure Committee and four sub-committees. Phil Hare is married with two children.
