Deborah L. "Debbie" Halvorson (born March 1, 1958 in Chicago Heights , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 2009 and 2011 she represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Debbie Halvorson grew up in Steger and attended Bloom High School . She worked as a saleswoman for cosmetic goods for 13 years before deciding to pursue a political career in the public service. At the same time she continued her education. In 1998 she graduated from Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. She then studied at Governors State University until 2001 . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . From 1993 to 1996 she worked in the local government of Crete Township . Between 1997 and 2008, Halvorson served in the Illinois Senate . There she belonged to three committees and three sub-committees. Since 2005 she has headed the democratic group.

In the 2008 congressional election , Halvorson was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she succeeded Republican Jerry Weller on January 3, 2009 . Since she lost to Adam Kinzinger in 2010 , she was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 2011 . She was a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Committee on Small Business and a total of four sub-committees.

In 2012, Halvorson sought to return to Congress, but lost the primary of her party significantly to incumbent Jesse Jackson Jr. After his resignation before the start of the new term of office, she ran for the nomination of the Democrats for the by-election due in April 2013 , but this time Robin Kelly was defeated with 24:52 percent of the vote.

Debbie Halvorson is married and lives in Crete .
